Stones River National Battlefield

Dec. 4, 2023

It felt right visiting this park in winter as the civil war battle that took place here was December 31-January 2, 1863. The wind made the hike chilly although it was very easy ground being essentially flat. I startled a buck that crossed my path through the small cedar groves. Most of the battle took place in the cotton fields at the edges of the tree lines. Both sides of the battle lost about the same numbers of soldiers but the confederates withdrew giving the victory to the union army who controlled this area until the end of the war.
