Sequoia National Forest
Oct. 5, 2025
This area was logged about 70 years ago so the trees are not as large as they are in the national parks to the north. I hiked the Unal “bear” trail which has a few markers with a pamphlet that tells of the natives from this area. I did not see any bears, however wildlife was in abundance. I saw at least 75 turkeys, numerous quail, a couple woodpeckers (I am guessing Acorn woodpeckers), an owl, squirrels, skunk, several coyotes, cute little birds I could not identify and a bunch of vultures. It was nice to see lots of baby sequoia trees mixed in with pine and fir. Several of the larger trees were still alive after a fire a few years ago. The trail also had a view of Lake Isabella. I was startled to see a guy dressed in camo with a rifle on the side of the road until I remembered that it is hunting season. He was probably after deer, although the plentiful turkey would make a decent dinner.
