Pompey's Pillar National Monument

April 9, 2024

Pompey’s Pillar is a big rock with the Yellowstone river on one side and prairie on the other. It is more interesting than at first glance. I was there during the off season so it requires a walk from the locked gates. Lots of marmots were scampering about near the visitors center using it as their own personal playground. There are numerous trails including a boardwalk and stairs that lead to the top. Graffiti has been happening for a long time in human history including on this rock by Captain William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition during his return journey in 1806. This can be seen from the boardwalk.
