Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park

Dec. 10, 2025

I found these mounds fascinating as clovis man spear points have been recovered here from 9000 BCE. The mounds were excavated in the 1930s and rebuilt. Different uses were discerned for the various mounds including temples, burial areas and gatherings. The Earth Mound has been recreated to allow entry. I also climbed on top of the Great Temple Mound which allowed a great view of downtown Macon. Modern man had a negative impact on the ancient site. The railroad went through the area on two different tracks in the 1800s and destroyed part of two of the largest mounds removing artifacts and skeletons in the process. An oak tree was obviously angry at me during my hike. Wind kicked up causing the tree to rain acorns on my head. A squirrel laughed hysterically at me from another tree.
