Mojave Trails National Monument

Feb. 4, 2026

This park borders the south side of Mojave National Preserve and is accessible along historic Route 66. I passed by Pisgah Crater and then hiked to Amboy Crater, both of which are ancient cinder cone volcanoes. The area is all lava rock. I was hoping to see a chuckwalla but only saw a western long tailed brush lizard playing among the rocks. Lots of wildflowers were present to bring the barren landscape to life such as burro weed, brittle bush, yellow cups and desert holly.
