Modoc National Forest
Aug. 7, 2026
This forest has two main sections on either side of US Hwy 395. I went on some very remote forest service roads to find Glass Mountain. GPS does not work up here, so I had drawn some maps with road numbers. I found Arnica sink (a dry lake bed) then I came across a truck going the opposite way asking me if I knew where the sink or glass mountain were. I hope they found them as my maps were not the best but I tried to tell them general directions. I did stumble across Glass Mountain after that encounter (they were going the wrong way). With that name, I was expecting a lot of obsidian. I was not expecting the majority of rocks being pumice with veins of obsidian mixed in. It made a very barren landscape with a few tiny pine trees trying to grow.
