Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

April 8, 2024

This is the one year anniversary of doing this quest and I am back in the same area as where I started. Custer’s famous last stand occurred here. The park follows where his troops started the first attack, retreated along the ridge line and ends five miles west where the final cavalry perished. One of the trails goes around where Custer divided his troops into several groups and the initial attack was ordered on the native village. You can see the old gun pits in the windswept grass where the troops dug into the hillisde for cover. There are scattered marble markers indicating where either US cavalry or the defending Sioux and Cheyenne warriors fell. Last Stand Hill is where the remaining troops were encircled which has a monument for the fallen soldiers, a monument for the deceased horses and a monument for the native tribes involved called “Peace Through Unity.” About 40 soldiers tried to make a break away from the hill and ran down to Deep Ravine. It was not the escape they thought it was going to be and the trail has numerous marble markers.
