Statue of Liberty National Monument

A ferry ride is required and it stops at both Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The best view and pictures of the statue are from the ferry pulling into the dock. It is easy to see the individual panels up close. Fascinating tidbit is that the French artist had a similar statue planned for the Suez Canal but was turned down. New York Harbor was the second choice. The original torch is inside the museum on the island as it was replaced during restoration in 1986. Ellis Island is part of the park and was fascinating with history of immigration to the US throughout time including countries of origin, forced migration (indentured servants, prisoners and slaves), immigration laws and entry styles. I do not have any relatives that passed through Ellis Island but there is a registry to look up the thousands of people that were processed here on their way to other parts of the US.
