Kings Canyon National Park

Sept 25-27, 2024

Day 1: I set up in the Azalea campground and immediately took off on foot heading to the General Grant tree, also known as America’s Christmas tree, largest circumference of a sequoia and the third largest tree in the world by volume. There were several other named trees along the path including Michigan and Tennessee trees. The coolest thing is a downed ancient tree with a hollow center that I walked through.

Day 3 (2 was spent in Sequioa)

I broke down camp and loaded up early in the morning. After wrapping my bloody toe in a bandage, I drove along the Kings river to the End of the Road. This takes you into the canyon the park is named after. I stopped at several spots including Roaring River Falls, Zumwalt Meadows and Muir Rock. The canyon and river are majestic with towering rock walls. My last stop was at Big Stump. I was planning on a loop hike but there were so many side trails that are not on the map that I just wandered about for an hour before heading back up to the parking lot. This area was logged in the 1880s that left behind huge stumps. If these trees were still alive, they would give Grant and Sherman trees a challenge for largest tree. Good thing sequoias are brittle and do not make good lumber or more of the two thousand year old trees would have been cut down.
