Keweenaw National Historic Park

Copper mining across the entire region brought people to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the 1800s. There are numerous sites that are included in the park and I walked around four of the former mines. Evidence is visible throughout the area with mounds of rock and black sand. I spent most of my time taking a tour of the Quincy mine. Several buildings and some of the equipment is still in place. The tour also includes a walk inside level seven of the mine underground. My claustrophobia did fairly well as the tunnel was enlarged in the 1970s and I was with a large group of people.
