I am impressed with the North Carolina state parks. They have been well maintained, nice trails and free to use. I went for an evening walk in this one along the Palmetto Boardwalk (swamp area), Tar Kiln trail (pine forest with 1700s tar kiln mounds), Huckleberry trail, Live Oak trail (next to the Palmico River) and Mallard Creek loop (no ducks found). Wildlife was abundant with noisy frogs in the swamp areas, squirrels among the pines and a couple startled deer at dusk. I was happy that the snakes were not out yet this time of year. I walked just over 5 miles that is hard to call a hike as it was essentially flat ground.
