The fort was built on the site of Fort Washburn that was burnt during the war of 1812 along with the capital by the British. It stood as a deterrent with guns aimed at the Potomac River to guard Washington, DC. The main fort is still standing along with numerous scattered concrete batteries around the point. I hiked the waterside loop trail to many of the batteries, lighthouse and along the waterfront scaring a couple ducks and a groundhog. My only complaint was excessive trash along the trails.
