Fort Donelson National Battlefield

June 5, 2024

This was the site of the first important victory by the union army during the civil war and involved General Ulysses S. Grant. The fort was a large earthen compound with numerous small log cabins that now looks like a hill, but the trenches are still visible in many spots along the driving tour. The confederates won the first portion of the battle on the Cumberland river, but the northern foot soldiers encircled the fort eventually leading to the surrender of the remaining troops. To the sounds of cicadas, I hiked a small portion of the River loop and Donelson trails, but stopped early due to the heat and trail conditions. Although the trails are well marked, they are overgrown from lack of use. I saw a cute mama deer and tiny fawn crossing the road while on the road tour. A ground hog provided entertainment by the river batteries stuffing its face with dry grass which I assumed was for nesting material.
