Canyon de Chelly National Monument

Nov. 6, 2025

There are two roads that go out on the ridges of a large canyon. To the north are three pullouts to view ruins below. The cool thing about this park is that there is flat land at the bottom of the canyon with occupied homesteads. It was strange to hear cows mooing from 600 feet down a cliff. About 40 Navajo families live in the canyon and since the park is jointly run with the tribe, local vendors sell their crafts at the pullouts. The south side had more views of ruins next to the more modern day houses. It made an interesting contrast. The roads are open range, so I saw more wild horses, a domesticated pig and a herd of sheep with their guardian dog. There were also several large tarantulas in the parking lot along the north rim.
