Carver

George Washington Carver National Monument

Sept. 24, 2025

This monument has many “firsts” such as first birthplace for a non-president, first for an African-American and many others. I really liked the life of George Washington Carver, especially in that he tried to take a nature walk daily. He was a remarkable man that discovered many uses for plants including most famously, the peanut. This was his birthplace into slavery during the civil war. He was orphaned during the war then stayed with his former owners for several years until moving to another city that had a segregated school that would allow him to attend. The thirst for knowledge led him to a university in Iowa and eventually as a college professor although he had to battle racism and prejudice every step of the way.
