Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site
July 23, 2026
The site is at Moton field which was a training airfield for learning to fly in smaller Piper airplanes before the pilots were sent to the main Tuskegee airfield for combat training. Moton field, hanger 1 and a few other buildings remain while the rest is gone. It was an experiment in WW2 with African American pilots and all support staff at the facility. It resulted in the famous Red Tails (painted the tail of the planes red) combat fighter group in Europe. I walked the grounds reading the information signs while small aircraft were taking off, making me almost feel like it was 80 years ago.
