Kings Mountain National Military Park

July 7, 2026

It was 18 years ago that I hiked at this park and realized that the SE definition of a mountain was vastly different than the west coast. I was under a time crunch to not get locked in the parking lot, so I did the same battlefield loop. The asphalt was so hot it was sticking to my shoes, bonus humidity also. The park was the site of an important revolutionary war battle in 1780 in which only one Brit was present and perished. Col. Ferguson’s death ended the battle with his American loyalist troops losing heart and surrendering. The trail winds through the woods and has markers that explain the battle and time period.
