It was super windy, but I was able to walk the entire fort and the pier trail before the rain hit. The brick, stone and oyster shell concrete fort is still intact and has the most amazing moat and an actual drawbridge. It only saw a bit of military action at the beginning of the civil war when it was not quite ready. The fort had about 1/3 of the cannons installed that it was supposed to have and they were already becoming obsolete compared to the weapons the union army had at its disposal. The fort took damage from the short battle and surrendered, to be occupied by the north until the end of the war.
