Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument
July 23, 2025
This is a small newer monument dedicated to the history of African Americans in the military and specifically Charles Young located at the house he bought when he was teaching military tactics at a college. He overcame many obstacles due to racism, graduated from West Point and was eventually a colonel in the Army lastly serving as attaché to Liberia. He was the first superintendent of Sequioa National Park during his military career. I did not realize that the army was involved in the running of the western parks and oversaw the building of many roads around the turn of the century.
