Fort Stanwix National Monument

Mar. 25, 2025

In 1777 the star shaped wooden fort was surrounded by hardwood forest. It is now in the center of the city of Rome, NY. The colonials were successful in defending the fort and important waterways from the British. It is located near the Mohawk river where the 6 mile portage eventually led to the Great Lakes. The Erie canal has replaced the much used land portage. The fort was rebuilt and is really cool looking with pointy logs reminiscent of a hedgehog. Tours inside are only open in the summer, but I could walk around the grounds. A tomb of the Unknown Soldier is off site but across the street with soldiers from the revolutionary war.
