Prehistoric Trackways National Monument
Dec. 10, 2024
This is a tiny monument tucked into the corner of Organ Mountains National Monument. There is a single trail that leads to the excavation area however, the road leading to the trail leaves much to be desired and makes it a much longer hike. I did not hike the entire length as there was a sign saying the pit where the ancient lizard tracks are found is closed to the public. The BLM website suggested a high clearance vehicle, so I rented a Toyota 4 runner. I made it about a mile further than most cars and I parked it next to a Jeep just before a gnarly pocked hill and started walking. About a mile up what the BLM loosely calls a road, there were numerous boulders that had fallen off the mountain and are now lying in the middle of the road. Dry creeks seemed to intersect and share the same path also. It ended up being a walk up a hillside for a view of Las Cruces.
